Healthy Eating Friday Challenge
Healthy Eating Friday Challenge: Have a meal with your “family” – that may mean your immediate related family or your roommates. If you live alone, plan a virtual meal with a family member or friend.
Family meals are a powerful habit for health. Family meals promote better family functioning, connectedness, cohesion and communication, as well as being associated with a higher quality diet and more fruits and vegetables consumed. As families are increasingly staying home in an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19, this is a great opportunity to revive the family meal in your home. Sharing a meal with those we care for improves mental health and reduces stress.
If you have children, especially small children, it can be difficult to get them on board with the idea of a family meal. Get your kids involved in the cooking process. This will encourage their buy-in and may help them try new healthy foods. Let them help plan the family meals and choose the vegetables that they want for dinner. Come up with theme dinner nights to keep things fun. If anything, cooking with your kids will let you spend time quality together and teach them a valuable life skill.
