November is American Diabetes Month!
Prediabetes is a condition where a person’s blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Prediabetes is reversible by incorporating a healthier lifestyle, such as increased physical activity, weight loss, and a healthier diet. Most people do not even know they have prediabetes and that it can turn into type 2 diabetes. During American Diabetes Month, the Southern Nevada Health District encourages everyone to do the following:
- Take the prediabetes risk test to see if you are at risk for developing this disease
- Check out our free, online diabetes prevention program called the Road to Diabetes Prevention The six-session course teaches participants about risk factors, and how to make simple lifestyle changes and is also available in Spanish.
- Participate in a self-management class. The Health District and its community partners offer education, and support for people with diabetes and their families as well as programs that can help people lower their risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
- Check out the Nevada Diabetes Resource Directory. This directory includes self-management guidance for people living with diabetes and their families. The Directory is also available in spanish.
