Summertime Safety
As temperatures are getting hotter in Las Vegas, many are looking forward to enjoying time in the pool! Swimming is a great way to beat the heat and enjoy physical activity during the summer. There are a few things that we can do to ensure we are safe in the sun and in the water.
Water Safety
Whether your family is spending time in the pool, at the beach or on a boat, you should be aware of the proper safety precautions. Parents of young children should:
- Make sure everyone understands basic water safety skills.
- Use life jackets as directed.
- Provide close supervision of children around any body of water, including swimming pools and lakes.
- Prevent children from getting into a pool unsupervised.
- Learn how to recognize and respond to a swimmer in distress.
- Learn how to perform CPR.
Summer Skin Safety
Long-term exposure to sunlight (specifically UV radiation) can increase the risk of skin cancer. There are a couple of things that can be done to lower the risk.
- Wear sunscreen properly and consistently.
- Select a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or more.
- Stay out of the sun during the peak hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Avoid tanning beds.
There is a lot that we can do to stay safe in the summer sun! Our team is partnering this summer with communities to hold active pool parties at city and county pools with free entry for families.
