Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, killing more than 400,000 Americans each year. Tobacco use is a major risk factor for developing chronic diseases such as:

  • Asthma
  • Cancer
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Diseases of the lungs

The Southern Nevada Health District Tobacco Control Program has four major goals:

  • Prevent youth initiation of smoking
  • Promote cessation among youth and adults
  • Eliminate secondhand smoke exposure
  • Eliminate health disparities among diverse populations

The health district tobacco control program works to raise awareness utilizing:

  • Counter-marketing strategies
  • Community initiatives
  • School and youth-based programs
  • Surveys
  • Support local coalitions and community groups that address tobacco issues
