The Great American Smokeout is an annual event that encourages Americans (of whom 45.8 million smoke) to quit tobacco smoking. It was first held in 1977, and is sponsored by the American Cancer Society. The Smokeout challenges people to not smoke cigarettes for 24 hours, hoping it will last forever.
The Smokeout comes on the heels of the Surgeon General’s report, which confirms there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke. The 2006 Great American Smokeout gives Nevadans an opportunity to quit using tobacco to protect their health and the health of their loved ones.
On November 16, 2006, the American Cancer Society’s Nevada Tobacco Prevention Coalition, the Southern Nevada Health District, Sierra Health Services and Bodies…The Exhibition, will invite smokers to trade a pack of cigarettes for a reduced price ticket to Bodies…The Exhibition. Participants can tour the exhibit and confirm the wisdom of their decision to consider quitting tobacco. The exhibit encourages participants to seek out the support they need to quit and stay quit – support and resources will be provided at the exhibit.
Because most smokers start using tobacco in their teen years, youth will be involved in this opportunity. Students from at risk schools in Clark County will tour Bodies…The Exhibition free of charge and will receive tobacco related information to support them in their choice to be tobacco free.
The Great American Smokeout event is being held from 10 am – 11 pm at Bodies…The Exhibition in the Tropicana Hotel located on Tropicana Avenue and Las Vegas Blvd.
